Muli bwanji?

Hello everyone! Hope everyone is doing well. Just wanted to update you on my new home away from home, the lovely town of Zomba, Malawi. I just arrived here 2 days ago and really like it so far. Zomba is much different than Lilongwe (the capital), much more rural, not as built up, and much prettier. The picture you see here a view from the hill I walked down to get to the center of town. I’ve already met a lot of cool people from all around the world here for various reasons. Some are peace corps volunteers, some are researchers working on the Ph.Ds, and some are working for an NGO. I went to two little get-togethers – mostly comprised of other mzungus (or azungu to be grammatically correct) which means foreigners. Everyone is very welcoming here and sometimes you forget you’re in Africa and its it feels more like you’re at a house party in college.

But anyway, yesterday D’lynn, my wonderful housemate for a few weeks, took me into town and showed me the market. We walked a few miles into town and I realized I need to be walking in something other than flip flops because those simply aren’t going to cut it. I bought a few chitchenjes (fabric you make into long skirts) and will definitely post pictures once I have those made!! I bought really pretty bright colors so that should help me blend in—just kidding. They even have Barack Obama chichenjes—shown here. How funny, right?

Later on that night we went to a little birthday celebration and had a feast. The most surprising dish was that of pig head. Yes, cooked pig head, sitting there in a pot staring at you. Teeth, snout, ears and all. I jumped right out of my seat when I saw that. And no, I did not try any. Below you can see a picture of D’lynn and a few others dancing around the house- we had ourselves a little dance party. You can also see a picture of me holding me new favorite drink- Pineapple sobo and Malawi vodka. And also another one of my trying to help out making the “whipped cream”- no canned variety here!

On another note, I’m really trying to learn Chichewa within the next month. I have some grammar books and I will be studying furiously until I become fluent. The title of this blog -- Muli bwanji – means how are you? The response is Ndiri bwino- which is I am well.
Well I hope everyone is well! Miss you all!

Love, Alyson
