Day 1 - Joburg

Well I have just arrived in Johannesburg after a VERY long flight and I’m rather exhausted. I’m staying at this cute little hotel for the evening until I hop back on another plane to head to Malawi. So far the trip has been great. Cars driving on the “wrong” side of the road and driver’s seats on the right are totally bizarre concepts to me. I think the best part of my trip so far is being in the warm weather. The heat and humidity reminds me of Miami, so I should be just fine. J

More about my 17 hour flight: Loved the choice of movies. Of course, I chose to watch Blood Diamond seeing as how I was en route to Africa. Great movie, but poor choice for someone with trip-related anxiety. I think there was a few times where I actually screamed on the plane when people were being shot at in the movie. I was able to have two seats to myself which was great because I could spread out. But next time I will be quicker and move myself to the center row where there are 5 seats and people can lay down and sleep. So now I know! I think the highlight of my arrival in Johannesburg International (or whatever the airport is called) was when I felt little paws on my legs and realized a drug-sniffing beagle was inspecting my backpack. He was so cute! He hopped on all the luggage did a little sniff and moved on.

Anyway, I’m about ready to get something to eat. I have no idea what the conversion of Rand to the dollar is- so I hope 80 Rand for chicken isn’t like ridiculously expensive. I will write more as soon as I can, probably in a few days. Hope everyone at home is well, I miss you all already! I have a feeling this is the beginning to an unforgettable experience that I can’t wait to share with you all when I return home.

Xoxo- Alyson
